National Library Week

Join us the week of April 12-18, 2009 for National Library Week. Kids there isn't any school on Monday, so stop in and make a cool bookmark. Tuesday is "Fine Free Day". You can return those overdue items without having to pay the fine!!! Wednesday is "Our Patrons are Treasures" Day. We will be giving out chocolate nuggets. Friday and Saturday we will be having Open House with cookies, coffee, punch and helium balloons for the kids. Stop in and see what the excitement all about. Get your own Library card for Free!

It is still cold and snowy, but the Library is the place to go to get movies, books and CDs. South Central schools are closed on Friday, Feb 13th and the North Fairfield Library is making Valentines' crafts and cards. Stop in between 12:00 and 4:00pm and take home a home-made Valentine for your sweetheart. You can also try to solve the Presidents' Day serarch the word and win candy.

Remember Sign Language Club is on Wednesday's at 4:00pm and Book Swap and Coffee is Friday mornings at 9:00am. Mark your calendars for the next movie showing at the Library on Saturday, February 21st at 12:30pm. We will show the popular High School Musical 3, it is 100 minutes long and is rated G. If you want to listen to the newest CD's or watch the latest movies, they are at the Library. This could be the perfect time to catch up on missed episodes of your favorite TV shows. Have a family movie night or reading afternoon by borrowing DVD's and books from your local Public Library.

Why not take home a cookbook on feeding your family for less? You could relax with a stack of magazines like NintendoGame, Dirt Wheels, CosmoGirl, Taste of Home, Country Sampler or Midwest Outdoors, to name a few. We carry the local and national newspapers. You can even borrow video games.

We provide access to public computers and the Internet. You can access and download ebooks to your MP3 player, search for a job and use the resume' wizard to spice up your resume'. Online practice tests like ACT, GED, etc are availabe at www.learningexpresslibrary.com. Check out online college classes and apply for financial aid. You can research your family tree and search for medical advice.

Our Ellison Machine cut outs can help you jazz up projects and scrapbook pages. Make new friends by joining our book discussion groups. Bring your children in for a story and craft project during one of our storytimes, activity days or family movie times. If you are recovering from surgery or unable to drive, the Library will even make deliveries.

Sign Language Club & Family Movie

The Sign Language Club will begin meeting again on Wednesday, September 17^th from 4:00 to 5:00pm at the North Fairfield Public Library. Mary Green, will be leading the club through a 10 week session called “Learn to Sign the Fun Way”. This is a fun way to learn Sign Language and deaf culture awareness. The club is open to all ages.

The September Family Movie is “Speed Racer”. It will be shown on Saturday, September 20^th at 12:30pm. The movie is rated PG and is 135 minutes long. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when we like to remind all district residents that your library card is the “smartest card” in your wallet. Mike Hemmelgarn comedy juggler & ventriloquist was at the North Fairfield Public Library on Saturday, June 14th. He did a great show and what a way to kick off our summer reading program. His puppet was very entertaining as well as was the balloon making, magic and getting the kids & adults in the crowd involved. A great time had by all at any age.

Catch the Reading Bug

Did you “Catch the Reading Bug” yet! Stop in to the North Fairfield Public Library and sign up for the summer reading program. We have a program for all ages, Read-to-Me, Buggy Readers (elementary), Teens (grade 6 and above) and Adults. Activity day for Read-to-Me and Buggy Readers is Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:00pm. Each week our activities will be based on a different insect. This week features Spider stories, crafts, games and a snack. Teens stop in for lunch bunch beginning Friday, June 27 at noon. Bring a sack lunch and hang out at the library for some great activities. Each week we are giving away prizes on Friday’s at 2:00pm, so the more you read the more chances you have to win a prize.

Our book sale was a great success! Thank you to everyone that donated books and purchased books. All proceeds from the sale will go to children’s programming and summer reading activities at the North Fairfield Public Library.

Boys, do you like big equipment? Well sign up at the North Fairfield Library for our Big Equipment Extravaganza! On Saturday, May 10^th at 1:00pm we will have transportation stories, a craft and snack and long with a Kenworth truck, excavator, skid loader and other equipment at the library for you to check out. It’s nice outside, but stop in the Library on Tuesday, May 13^th for Dance, Dance Revolution. Bring your friends and have fun! National Library Week and upcoming events

We are celebrating National Library Week April 14-19. Stop in the North Fairfield Public Library and play our Boggle Bulletin Board Game. Prizes will be awarded to the adult, teen and elementary age patron that figures out the most words from the Boggle Board. Pick up your game piece and the letters will be posted on the Bulletin Board on Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18th, you must turn in your list of words by Saturday, April 19 at 12:00pm.

Teens, 5^th grade and up please, can also enjoy playing Guitar Hero with their friends on Saturday, April 19^th from 12-2pm. Teens stop in and check out the guessing jar to win a prize, you must be present to win.

Celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22^nd at 4:00pm by recycling materials into a cool craft. Please bring a 1-gallon milk jug or 2 liter pop bottle. January is a great month to head into the library to learn something new. On Saturday, Jan 12 at 1:00 you can learn to knit. It is a great time of year to make a new scarf or mittens. Just bring #10 knitting needles and a package of hot chocolate.

The North Fairfield Library Reading Club will start off 2008 with a book selection party on Thursday, January 24 at 7:00pm. For 2008, we will be choosing from mysteries, so anyone that lovea to read and read mysteries is welcome to join in the fun! Light snacks will be served.

On Thursday, Dec. 27^th at 3:00pm will be Pirates: Dean Man’s Chest. The third and newest Pirates: At World’s End will be shown on Saturday, December 29^th at 1:00pm. Get a Clue @ Your Library summer Reading Program has quickly gone by this summer. The final day and prize drawing will be held on Friday, July 20th at 2:00pm. Join us for a Movie under the Stars. We will be showing "Astronaut Farmer" outside under the stars in the yard next to the library on Saturday, July 14th at 9:00pm. Astronaut Farmer stars Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Willis, and Virginia Madsen and is rated PG. This will be a great family and community event to attend. Popcorn will be provided, please bring your own drink and lawn chair or blanket.

Get a Clue @ Your Library Summer Reading continues with crafts and an I Spy game on Wednesday afternoons anytime between 3:00 and 6:00pm. The Spot 7 game is available daily and changes each week. The May book was "Eye Contact" by Cammie McGovern. Most of the readers in the club thought is was a good read. 12 members read the book, with the average rating a 4 out of 5. A few comments:

A suspenseful story of murder and the connections of many people.

A book I just didn't want to put down.

Good Story written in comparison and I feel the author portrayed his characters well.

A new twist at every turn. I also learned a lot about autism.

A good choice for a reading club. Enjoyed reading it.

Overall a good reading club book.

The next book is "The Other Woman" by Jane Green. This should be a fun read. We have it available in book on CD also. Stop in, sign up for the adult summer reading program and pick up the next reading society book.

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to let you know about some really good books I have been reading. I am reading the book Plain Secrets: An Outsider Among the Amish by Joe Mackall. This book is about one of the strictest orders of the Amish religion, the Swartzentruber Amish. Dr. Mackall lives near this Amish community and has written this book to tell their story. This is a book for anyone that wants to look deeper into the Amish religion and to learn a lot of true facts about the Amish.

I have also been listening to the book Peter and the Starcatchers written by Dave Berry and read by Jim Dale. That's right all you Harry Potter fans!! This is the same reader for the audio books of the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. (To slip in another reminder, the 7th, final book of the Harry Potter series comes out July 21st!!! Amy has pre-ordered it so I know the NF library will have it) I love listening to him read! He gives all the characters different voices and characteristics. Thus, making the book come to life while you are listening to it. This is a good book for the kids to listen to or even read! Also, there is a second book in this series, Peter and the Shadow Thieves which is available in audio book form.

I must be signing off now but I have one more thing to announce. The Moose Lodge in Norwalk has donated some very nice books to the North Fairfield Library. They have allowed us to add to our YA collection and we should all thank them for that. So all you teens need to come check out our new books!!

Summer Reading at the Library

It's that time of year again!! Summer reading program has started at the North Fairfield Library. There is something for the whole family. There's our Read-to-me program, Detectives(readers 5th grade and under), Young Adult program, and Adult program. The theme this year is Get A Clue @ your Library. Bring the family in and sign-up for the program.

Wait!! Whats that you say?? You want to know more about the program. There are several prizes offered throughout the six week program that kids get for reading and for solving different puzzles. For example, every Wednesday we will have I Spy Detective Corner from 3:oo-6:00PM. You can come at anytime during these hours, and make a craft, play an I Spy game, and put your name in a drawing for a prize. There's a weekly SPOT 7 game that allows you to win candy! Of course for reading or not, each child can put there weekly ticket in there designated jar. The drawings for those prizes will be every Friday at 2:00PM.

There's a mystery to solve!! Who stole the pictures from the Children's Room??? There are wanted posters up on the wall. Every week there will be a clue to help the detective readers figure out who did it!!! Come to see the pictures of the suspects in the Children's Room of the NF Library:

Don't miss our special programs too!! Jim Kleefeld the magician is coming to the NF Library on Friday, June 15th, 2007, at 12:00PM to solve The Mystery of the Missing Books. There will be an all day I Spy Game on July 5th and a family movie night showing of Astronaut Farmer. The exciting part about this movie is that it will be shown OUTSIDE!!!!

Finally, don't forget about the party at the end of summer reading on July 20th!! At this party, we will have the final grand prize drawings!!! Come to the Library to see all the prizes we will be giving away!!

Reading Society

The next Reading Society selection is now available at the desk. Stop in and pick up Even tide by Kent Haruf.

The previous selection was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Ten members read the book and 6 completed the rating sheet. The average rating was 3.3.

A few comments were:
The author did a goo job of portraying how one tragedy can effect people differently. How each family member and or friends dealt with Susie's death differently. A suspensful book.

This is one of the strangest books I've ever read. I reads almost like a fairy-tale, but the author makes it all seem real. It's one of those books you can't quit thinking about long after you finished reading it.

I did not really enjoy this book.

This was a very sad book.

Tiny Tots Storytime

Reading Society Review

The February Book Society selection was "Any bitter thing" by Monica Wood. This was a popular selection. We had 13 patrons check out the book and received 9 comment sheets back. Thank you to all who read and commented. Here are a few comments:

Wow! Unexpected twist with every turning page. I could not quit reading!

I enjoyed the book. In the beginning I had some problems maintaining interest in it, but as it went on it was better.

Really good book! The kind you don't want to put down - very sad though- how just one person can mess up so many lives.

A well written story about a woman who is able to come to terms with a difficult childhood, discovery and move on.

The characters learn about their own loved ones and many skeletons in their closets. As a result much affect both girls lives. Dull & Dreary.

The next selection which is currently available is "The lovely bones" by Alice Sebold. Stop in and pick one up today.

Reading Society

The next Reading Society Book is Any bitter thing by Monica Wood and is available beginning today. Any bitter thing is a surprising, gripping and compassionate tale of family, faith and deeply hidden truths.

Our January selection was Home to Big Stone Gap by Andriana Trigiani and was read by 15 members. On average you rated the book a 3 out of 5. A few comments ~~ A very relaxing fictional story about some honest to goodness, genuine characters and their lives, an easy read, story was pretty good but not overly involving, this book deals with life’s joys, sadness, loss and understanding of it all. Overall most of you enjoyed the book and some of you are looking for more books by this author. Thanks for being involved in the group.

Today is the big day to change to our new Catalog system. So far so good! The new system is a windows based system and is part of a consortium. This gives you, the patron the ability to have more books, movies, music and other items available to you. Items can be requested from your home computer or the library delivered to the North Fairfield Public Library for pick up.
